CoderDojo is a global volunteer-led community of free programming workshops for young people between 7 and 17. The movement is a grassroots organization with individual clubs (called “Dojos”) acting independently. Established in mid-2013 by cofounder James Whelton, the CoderDojo Foundation is focused on supporting, scaling, and empowering the CoderDojo Community.

CoderDojo encourages children to experiment with technology and programming. The youngest among them learn how to program games with Scratch. As their interest grows, they switch to mBot, controlling robots, or micro:bits, programming a cool micro:bit board into a musical instrument or alarm clock, for example. Other children who want to experiment more with electronics do so via Arduino UNO boards with which they control LEDs, displays, motors and other electronic components.

Since September 2018, the monthly CoderDojo sessions for the Antwerp-Centre department have been held in Toreon’s office. This year we sponsored the purchase of 19 new laptops for the students.
